Looking Ahead – A Solid Foundation for Life and Business
As we look toward and plan for the new year, it’s a perfect time to reflect upon what is at the foundation of our business, what drives us to succeed, and what motivates us to keep pushing forward, even through tough times. The source of your unwavering commitment to your business, though it may be intangible, is very real.
In his book, Man’s Search for Meaning, Viktor Emil Frankl, introduces his psychological theory, “logotherapy,” which sprang from his observations of the diverse responses of Nazi concentration camp prisoners to sustained, inhumane conditions and lessons learned for spiritual survival. From the Greek word “logos” – in English, “meaning” or “reason” – the theory maintains that our primary drive in life is to discover and pursue what we find personally meaningful, which imparts a reason to live.
As this quote from his book asserts, pursuit of that purpose brings even greater fulfillment: “The more one forgets himself – by giving himself to a cause to serve or another person to love – the more human he is and the more he actualizes himself.”
This applies to both life and business. In business, it’s the all-important touchstone that helps you never lose sight of:
• WHY you do what you do.
• What you are in business to accomplish.
• What need(s) you are meeting.
That focus is important in order to maintain perspective and direction. But what about the details of HOW you make your business what you envision?
